You Didn't Earn This (Gospel Life Series: Episode 11 of 19)

You didn’t earn this. And that’s exactly why you can trust it.

This week at backcountry.church we’re stepping into one of the most powerful and misunderstood chapters in the Bible—Romans 9:1–18.

Paul opens with something unexpected—not theology, but heartbreak. He’s not detached from people who don’t know Christ… he’s broken over them. And here’s what makes it even more sobering: the people he’s talking about had everything spiritually. They had the law, the promises, the covenants, the history—and even the lineage of Christ Himself—yet they still missed Jesus.

That should stop us.

Because it means you can be close to truth… and still not surrender to it.

Then Paul takes us deeper. God’s promise has never been about where you come from or how hard you try. Isaac, not Ishmael. Jacob, not Esau. Before they were born, before they had done anything good or bad, God was already at work. Not reacting. Not adjusting. Carrying out His purpose.

And that leads to the tension we all feel:

“Is that fair?”

Paul answers clearly—mercy isn’t something God owes. If it were earned, it wouldn’t be mercy. Salvation doesn’t come from trying harder, being better, or doing more. It comes from God.

Which means this:

You didn’t earn it.

You can’t deserve it.

You don’t control it.

You receive it.

And that’s not bad news—that’s the best news possible. Because if your salvation depended on you, you could lose it. But because it depends on God, you can trust it.
